My Brother,
At every meeting of Essex Lodge #7, when Lodge is closed and the Chaplain leads the brethren in our devotions, it is asked of our members to keep in our prayers our servicemen and servicewomen who bravely defend our country and preserve the freedoms which we all value so dearly.
With this in mind, our reflections on the brave sacrifices of our servicemen and servicewomen are peaked this month as we celebrate Memorial Day on May 31. While this holiday is sometimes diminished by its association with barbecues and blockbuster retail sales, we as Masons must not forget the true meaning of the day and must pause to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen servicemen and servicewomen.
This year, I ask our brethren to keep in their thoughts our brother Captain Henry Clay Bartlett. Brother Bartlett, who was raised in Caldwell Lodge #59, was commissioned a Captain in Company G of the 33rd Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. On May 8, 1864, Brother Bartlett was mortally wounded at Rocky Face Ridge at Mill Creek Gap near Dalton, Georgia. While Brother Bartlett is remembered by the naming of the Caldwell GAR Post in his honor, Brother Bartlett’s grave is believed to lie along a road near the place of his death, with no marker to memorialize the site.
As we plan to celebrate Memorial Day this month, I ask the brethren to reflect on the sacrifices of Brother Bartlett and our many other brethren who have given their lives at home and abroad in service to our great country.
Fraternally,
Michael A. DeMiro Jr.
Worshipful Master
